Tax time is upon me. I like to find symbolism in the most unlikely places. Taxes are one of those unlikely places.
What do taxes symbolize? On the material level they are a way for our country to pull together and provide funds for beneficial programs such as roads, urban housing, food stamps, work programs, military and many more. What do they mean on a deeper level.
Like Jesus said about paying the Roman taxes: Give unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s and to God that which is God’s. Is this the deeper meaning? I think it is a deeper meaning. We must give what is due to people for their work and efforts and that includes the Government.
Surely there is something deeper.
Let’s see what comes up. Taxes can be seen as:
A hazing ritual for a big fraternity that you go through every year.
A thorn in the side of the masses that overcomes race, sex or religion to bind us all together as brothers.
An attempt to level the economic playing field but as in most things every one still yells “unfair”.
I like this last one because a lot of people see life as unfair and to them the tax system is unfair. What is fair? I think we all have a “fair” opportunity at life but the only reason I can say this is because I believe we chose to be here and we chose the type of life we were going to have.
Yes, I chose this. Thinking like that means I chose the taxes. If I chose the taxes to enter my life there must be a reason. My head hurts, I’m going to bed.
