Team vs. Self-Sufficiency

I have been hearing the term ‘team work’ for a long time, but I don’t think that I have actually understood the concept. In the USA, we live in a society that tends to admire self-sufficiency. Our roots are tied to the pioneers who struck out and survived by their own wits and efforts. However we tend to forget that those individual efforts usually had others involved in support roles. The pioneers had to have wheel-wrights, water-wrights, cart-wrights and others who helped them get to where they were going.

These pioneers also quickly realized that survival often depended on others and the strength of numbers. It was dangerous and suicidal to break off from the wagon train and head of across country alone.

There were mountain men who hunted and trapped in the mountains, staying out on their own for months at a time but they still relied on the trading post to be there when they came down from the mountain. They had to convert their pelts into corn meal and tobacco. They needed people.

We still need each other even though we don’t want to admit it. An individual can have a grand idea but that person still needs others to work with them to see it come true. Our founding fathers started with one person with a grand plan but it took many to make it come true and many of those lost their lives for the effort.  In business, team is very important. An individual can try to be the marketer, accountant, attorney, but in trying to do them all they will do none of them very well. It is best to stick with what you do well and have others do the rest.

When people come together for a common effort, amazing things can happen. A whole country maybe born. Who do you work with?
